The development classes describe the silvicultural and productive stages of stand development.

NFI 12/13 (2018-2022)

Data corrected 20.11.2023. The correction concerns the area of Northern Finland: North Ostrobothnia, Kainuu and Lapland. The correction also affects the data for the whole country.
The results for whole country, Southern - and Northern Finland are calculated using the measurements of NFI13 during the years 2019-2022. The region of Åland measured in 2018.

Temporarily unstocked regeneration stand

A treeless area or an area with standing crop ripe for cleaning and/or single retention trees.

Young seedling stand

Dominant height under 1.3 metres.

Advanced seedling stand

Dominant height over 1.3 metres, but the diameter of the trees at breast height is mostly below 8 cm and the largest trees no more than about 10 cm.

Young thinning stand

At thinning cut stage, cutting produces mostly pulpwood.

Advanced thinning stand

Most stems saw timber size.

Mature stand

Ripe for regeneration; next action regeneration cutting.

Shelter tree stand

Regeneration cutting done, and about 150-300 trees per hectare left in the area for reseeding.

Seed tree stand

Regeneration cutting done, and about 30-150 trees per hectare left for reseeding.

Uneven aged stand

The stand includes trees of different age- and size classes.
