Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are companies that employ less than 250 people and have an annual turnover of less than EUR 50 million or a balance sheet total of less than EUR 43 million.
A microenterprise is a company that employs less than 10 people.
A small enterprise is a company that employs less than 50 people and have an annual turnover of less than EUR 10 million or a balance sheet total of less than EUR 10 million.
A medium-sized enterprise employs 50-249 people. A company of less than 50 employees is also regarded as a medium-sized enterprise if its annual turnover or balance sheet total is more than EUR 10 million.
Municipality-based urban-rural typology:
In a municipality-based urban-rural typology, a municipality is regarded as an urban area if the number of population in its inner and outer core urban areas is higher than the number of rural population outside the sub-urban area. A municipality located in a sub-urban area is regarded as an urban area or a rural area close to an urban area on the basis of its urban and rural characteristics. Other municipalities are classified as rural areas close to urban areas, rural heartland areas and sparsely populated rural areas on the basis of their total land area and the number of population. Information about rural centres is included in the surrounding area category.
