A small growth company is an enterprise which employs less than three people (defined as less than 3.5 person years) at the beginning of the growth period and which increases its number of personnel by at least three people during the growth period. The statistics of growth companies have been prepared by using different business statistics of Statistics Finland. The statistics of the structure and financial statements of enterprises act as the main source. A growth period consists of the first year and the next three years of growth, i.e. a total of four years. A company must be engaged during every year of the growth period in order to be included in the statistics. The material does not include enterprises, the field or municipality is unknown. Municipality-based urban-rural typology:
In a municipality-based urban-rural typology, a municipality is regarded as an urban area if the number of population in its inner and outer core urban areas is higher than the number of rural population outside the sub-urban area. A municipality located in a sub-urban area is regarded as an urban area or a rural area close to an urban area on the basis of its urban and rural characteristics. Other municipalities are classified as rural areas close to urban areas, rural heartland areas and sparsely populated rural areas on the basis of their total land area and the number of population. Information about rural centres is included in the surrounding area category.
