Table presents forestry environmental aid contracts (payment decisions) and the implementation of nature management projects in accordance with the Act on the Financing of Sustainable Forestry (from 2024 onwards: the Act on a Temporary Forestry Incentive Scheme) carried out by the Finnish Forest Centre under the METSO Programme. Table presents implementation (ten-year forestry environmental aid contracts and implementation of nature management projects) of the METSO Programme in the Finnish Forest Centre annually and cumulatively between 2008 and 2024.
The official forest protection statistics include the surface area of the forestry environmental aid contracts that were valid at the time of updating the forest protection statistics on 1 January 2022. The forest protection statistics include the area of forest habitats of special importance referred to section 10 of the Forest Act that are included in forestry environmental aid contracts.
METSO Programme
The goal of the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland (METSO), ranging from 2008 to 2025, is to develop the nature conservation area network for 96,000 hectares and, by means of forestry environmental aid contracts and implementation of nature management projects, to safeguard 82,000 hectares of valuable forest habitats in commercially managed privately owned forests by 2025. Participation in the METSO Programme is voluntary for forest owners.
ELY Centres act as regional bodies in the development of the conservation network. In ELY Centres, the METSO Programme is implemented 1) by land purchases for the Government for conservation purposes, 2) by establishing private nature reserves, and 3) by conserving areas temporarily for at most 20 years. In addition, it is possible to exchange land for similar state-owned land.
The Finnish Forest Centre implement the METSO Programme by means of ten-year forestry environmental aid contracts and by implementing nature management projects in accordance with the Act on the Financing of Sustainable Forestry (from 2024 onwards: the Act on a Temporary Forestry Incentive Scheme).
Furthermore, Metsähallitus implements the METSO Programme on state-owned land and carries out e.g. nature management activities in private nature reserves.
