The employment rate has been calculated as the percentage of employed people of 15-64 (20-64) years from all people of the same age in 2005-2014 on the basis of EU degree of urbanisation.
This data is based on a sample-based EU Labour Force Survey.
EU Degree of Urbanisation:
Regarding the degree of urbanisation, areas with a high population density of at least 300 inhabitants per square kilometre and with at least 5,000 inhabitants are first defined. If less than half of the population of an LAU 2 area (municipalities in Finland) live in areas with a high population density, the area is regarded as a thinly populated area. At the second stage, uniform areas with a very high population density of at least 1,500 inhabitants per square kilometre and with at least 50,000 inhabitants are defined. If more than half of the population of an LAU 2 area live in areas with a very high population density, the area is regarded as a densely populated area. An LAU 2 area is regarded as an intermediate density area if less than half of the population live in an area with a high population density and less than half of the population live in areas with a very high population density.
Starting from 2012 data, the EU Degree of Urbanisation has followed a new definition. The new definition is based on grid cells of 1 km2. The previous definition was based on LAU 2 areas (municipalities in Finland).
