There is a break in the time series for the data in 2018. The calculation of the risk of poverty or social exclusion was revised for the 2020 statistical year. The calculation is based on new definitions of underemployment and severe material and social deprivation, in accordance with the statistical methodology of Eurostat. Comparable time-series data on the risk of poverty or social exclusion were updated starting in 2018 in the Statistics on living conditions. The previous comparable time series for the risk of poverty and social exclusion covers the years 2005-2017. In a municipality-based urban-rural typology, a municipality is regarded as an urban area if the number of population in its inner and outer core urban areas is higher than the number of rural population outside the sub-urban area. A municipality located in a sub-urban area is regarded as an urban area or a rural area close to an urban area on the basis of its urban and rural characteristics. Other municipalities are classified as rural areas close to urban areas, rural heartland areas and thinly populated rural areas on the basis of their total land area and the number of population. Information about rural centres is included in the surrounding area category.
